Party Line: Face time
Like the majority of people out there, public speaking isn’t near the top of the list of things I look forward to doing. Don’t get me wrong, I have gotten more comfortable with it over the years, although it does still come with a little bit of anxiety.
So I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout and the reception from a short presentation I gave during the Halloween & Party Expo in January. Thanks to Nicole Leinbach Reyhle of the Independent Retailer Conference for asking me.
The topic was “5 Ways to Enhance Your In-Store Shopping Experience,” something I feel is pertinent to brick-and-mortar retailers these days, so it was fairly easy to discuss. A recap of the presentation can be found here.
It was great being able to see so many of our readers in one spot, holding their attention, hopefully, and making eye contact with everyone. The best part came after I finished, however, and I have to thank Rich Kizer and Georganne Bender of Retail Adventures Blog, who were the emcees of the education portion of HPE and gave several presentations themselves.
“How often do you get a chance to meet an editor of a magazine?” Rich asked the audience members as they started to disperse. “Get up there and take a selfie with Zeke and post it to your social media pages.”
It was a great way to break the barrier between speaker and audience. More importantly, it was a chance to have a quick word and a fun photo op with readers. After all, what we do is all about you.
