The Game Plan

Knock this season’s end-of-the-year party out of the park

By Sam Ujvary, Assistant Editor

“Good game.”

“Good game.”

“Good game.”

“Good game.”

These repetitive words are all too familiar. As kids walk in a line down the middle of the field, showcasing comradery for opponents, with a bittersweet feeling that they won’t see these competitors until next season.

It’s the last game of the season, and your kiddos have put in one heck of a year. Whether it be football, soccer, baseball or any number of other sport seasons in a given year, there’s a bit of excitement found in remembering there’s one last hurrah coming after the final game or match has been played.

There are a lot of right ways — and a handful of wrong ways — to celebrate the little athletes’ accomplishments for the year. Decide to have a season-ending baseball party at the local batting cages, the Soccer Superstars bash at an indoor soccer complex, or just use the good old classic arcade or rec center as a location; the options are seemingly limitless to make this a success.

Snacks and desserts are a fun way to add an extra item to the theme, be it hockey puck cupcakes or football-shaped cookies (laces out). It’s also an area that allows for a lot of creative freedom, in terms of what to offer.

Decorations should span beyond balloons and table covers. You can select a themed package, offered by companies like Forum Novelties, or you can opt to put together your own color and pattern assortment. Having a couple piñatas are a great décor addition, and they double as a game for the kids to play at the party (if in the appropriate setting). Having various games to play also makes for a fun party. We’ve done a little research and found some pretty unique ideas for end-of-the-year party games. Below are some of our favorites.

  • Team-themed Yankee sift swap
  • Parents vs. Kids game
  • Themed scavenger hunt
  • Best-dressed fanatic contest
  • Obstacle course relays
  • Create lip sync or Dubsmash videos together

The end-of-the-season party is meant to be an upbeat celebration for a team that worked well together over the course of the year. Cover all your bases with some of these products finds. Having lots to do, eat and honor will guarantee a great time by all.
