DIY among gift ideas for Valentine's Day

By Sam Ujvary | Assistant Editor

Ahhh, Valentine’s Day. A heart-warming day in the cold middle of winter to showcase your love to your significant other (or your favorite “galentines”) with chocolates, cards and everything heart-shaped.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) has conducted a consumer spending survey for 14 years, and this year’s statistics prove a near-record spending number. “U.S. consumers are expected to spend an average of $143.56 on Valentine’s Day as 55 percent of the population celebrates this year,” said this year’s study. “Total spending is expected to reach $19.6 billion, up from $18.2 billion last year.”

Celebrating an un-Valentine’s Day? NRF stated about three in 10 consumers indicated they won’t be celebrating in a traditional sense. That doesn’t mean they won’t be treating themselves to a “Galentine’s Day” or a “Me Day,” in fact, 11.5 percent plan to treat themselves to something special, while 9.8 percent plan to attend a get-together with another 3.3 percent purchasing themselves or someone else “anti” Valentine’s Day gifts.

Millennials, Gen Z and younger consumers are driving new trends in just about every category, and DIY is constantly prominent.

When talking about DIY in this case, we’re thinking baskets that feature Valentine’s Day essentials; candy, greeting cards, flowers and perhaps a nice dinner or night out. According to the survey, top spending categories include: Jewelry at $4.7 billion; an evening out at $3.7 billion; flowers at $2 billion; candy at $1.8 billion and apparel at $1.9 billion.

Party & Halloween Retailer decided to take this DIY craze to our advantage, so we’ve put together some items we think would fit perfectly into customers’ own homemade baskets.
