Ragstock

Halloween costumes and party supplies are popular with this distinctive retailer

Ragstock is a retailer located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which carries a variety of vintage and recycled clothing along with a large selection of new, affordable apparel and accessories. The store also offers a wide selection of Halloween costumes and party supplies to its customers.

The company was founded in 1954 by Howard Weisskopf who opened the first store, located in the Ragstock warehouse sometime in the early 1970s. Libby Finn, president of Ragstock, said although its original store location is no longer in existence, the Northfield retail store is the longest standing Ragstock store out of 38 locations.

“We have opened new stores slowly over the years, as the right spaces became available. In the past five years we have opened stores in new markets like Austin, Texas, and Boulder and Ft. Collins, Colorado,” said Finn.

The Chicago locations have nine full-time employees, who work diligently to assist its customers. While Halloween is a busy season for Ragstock, it doesn’t rely on seasonal hiring. Instead staff is hired as necessary, to meet the demands of the business.

From the beginning, Ragstock has offered vintage and recycled clothing, all at affordable price points. “We offer a wide selection of fashion-forward apparel and accessory items for men and women, spanning many demographics,” she said. “We carry an enormous selection of Halloween costumes and party items, as well as ugly Christmas sweaters and holiday accessories. There is truly something for everyone at Ragstock.”

Finn shared the costume, prop and accessories displays are rotated for every holiday. Since the store offers a wide variety of party and costume items, it is able to highlight merchandise for many holidays: Halloween, Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Pride and spirit weeks. “Typically our stores receive new shipments every week,” Finn said. With the influx of new merchandise, displays are kept fresh and rotate accordingly.

“We give our stores a lot of creative freedom to develop their in-store displays and windows during Halloween,” she said. “It creates a lot of excitement for the staff and our customers, and it's always a treat to see what they come up with.”

Finn noted Ragstock procures its curated mix through vendors in New York, Los Angeles and overseas. And Finn has seen a few notable trends: “Right now teddy jackets, plaid and corduroy items are selling well for women. For men, windbreakers and icon wovens are hot.”

Ragstock is a destination ready for shoppers to explore, whether it be inside its brick-and-mortar locations or its online store at http://www.ragstock.com If co.nsumers want to experience an in-person visit, there are 38 locations to choose from. And if there isn’t a location near you, Finn said, “We are always looking for new locations that would work for our stores, so stay tuned!”
