PPR: How long have you been in business?
The store was founded in 1901. I brought the store in 1988, and I’m the fourth owner.
PPR: When did you develop a fascination with Halloween and costumes?
In the first year of owning the business, I was talking to some U.S. costumers who couldn’t find anything for Halloween. That was my trigger point.
PPR: How is Halloween different in Europe versus the U.S.?
The tradition in the EU (European Union) is a little different the in the U.S. (There is) hardly any trick-or-treating, but more adult parties. Themes vary per organizer. As they know what we do for Halloween, (customers) always keep us posted on their themes. That helps us to adjust our stock level on specific items.
PPR: What are the current trends and tastes in costuming?
There is more DIY from our customers. Especially there is growth in makeup, with the popular TV series “Empire of the Dead,” “The Walking Dead” and “True Blood.” Vampires and zombies are the most popular items.
