Party People: Laurie Ross
Life O’ The Party
Hackensack, New Jersey
Laurie Ross found a passion for entertaining at a young age on grand stage — the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. Today, Ross employs her skills as a performer at Life O’ The Party — one of the premier entertainment and balloon companies in the metropolitan New York area. Established in 1980, Life O’ The Party products have been featured in numerous big-budget films, including “You’ve Got Mail,” “Ransom” and Oliver Stone’s “World Trade Center.”
1. What is the best retail advice you’ve received?
Label everything with your logo, phone number and web address.
2. What are your goals for the year?
Increase visibility and ultimately sales via social media — LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
3. What are your biggest retail frustrations?
Being primarily in the balloon and entertainment business, people really don’t take us seriously as a business that is no more or less a business than any other. Their expectations are both far greater (when they need us) and far less (when they think of us as professionals and a real profession). How do you handle them? We do the best we can in being available seven days a week and always being prepared for the worst while striving to be the best at what we do.
4. How do you stay passionate about what you do?
I have been singing and dancing since I was a young girl, having performed as a singer and dancer at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. When I answered an ad at Life O’ The Party for entertainer, I knew I had found the perfect place to continue my showbiz ways of performing as a singer, dancer and doing a little acting, too.
5. If you had $10,000 to do whatever you wanted to your store, what renovations would you make?
Upgrade our large lighted signage in our parking lot and air-condition the warehouse.
