Peer Perspective: Ray Cappel, Cappel’s of Cincinnati

Ray Cappel

Co-owner, Cappel’s

Cincinnati, Ohio

If you can’t find it at Cappel’s, you can’t find it anywhere. That line of thinking has made Cappel’s a Cincinnati staple since 1945. Cousins Ray and Rich Cappel scour the country looking for unique items. That’s so their loyal customers never need to go anywhere else.

What makes Cappel’s so unique?

I don’t care how many Party City (shops) they put in Cincinnati. The biggest reason why, and why I think people come to us, is that they find a lot of hard-to-find items; they find a lot of items the big guys don’t even carry. We basically dig these items up by traveling to trade shows and trade shows outside of the party industry to find things that we can make our stores unique.

How have holiday sales changed over the years?

Most holidays have to do with wearables. At Christmastime, we used to sell a lot of different ornaments and tree trimmings. Now, it’s all geared toward wearables (and costumes) of some type.

Cappel’s in housed in a five-story building. How do you keep track of everything?

There’s a system, but it’s not in the computer and it’s not on a POS. We know where things are. Everything you see here is more ‘you just know where it is.’
