Quick Q&A with Korynn Knight of Party Heaven
Korynn Knight’s role as manager of Party Heaven in Berkeley, California, combines several of her passions: small “mom-and-pop” businesses, creativity and comics. Knight has been with Party Heaven for nearly 10 years after previously running a small gift shop in Yosemite National Park. As Knight put it, she “loves small businesses best.”
PPR: Have you always had a passion for costumes?
I have always been really interested in building costumes. I am definitely a crafty person with not enough time.
PPR: What is your favorite all-time costume?
For my customers: The inflatable T-REX. We need more dinosaur costumes! For me: I handmade my own steampunk costume. I had to explain it a lot the first year I wore it, but now everyone understands.
PPR: What is the most unusual costume someone has come in the store looking for?
We had a confused man come in claiming he wanted to be Hitler for Halloween. We managed to persuade him that it would be better to be anything else but then he said he wanted to be the Ebola virus. He just wanted attention. We get a lot of topical costumes. From one year to the next it varies widely. Last year it was a lot of couples dressing up as political candidates as star-crossed lovers (Hillary-Bernie, Hillary-Trump). Occasionally we will get customers building a costume with a specific protest theme in mind — oil spills, nuclear radiation, animal rights, and, of course, we sell Guy Fawkes masks.
I welcome new ideas — it’s part of what makes my job fun.
PPR: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I am a huge fan of comic books and a voracious reader. The comics thing really comes in handy because customers will say they want to be a character and I will actually know who they are talking about. One little boy was stoked that I not only knew who Killer Moth was, but helped him put together his costume from items around the store.
PPR: What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
“Star Wars The Force Awakens.” Twice.
PPR: What is the best party you’ve ever attended?
Murder mystery parties. It was the way my friends from middle school kept in touch during high school. It was also a great way to meet new people and wear awesome costumes.
