The Store Room:  “What have you found to be the most useful social media tool?”

Our monthly column is devoted to what works and what doesn't - for our readers, from our readers

"What have you found to be the most useful social media tool for your business?"

Our Facebook page has greatly increased our ability to reach people on a much more personal level. People are able to use our Facebook page to ask inventory questions, make appointments, check our daily or weekly sales/promotions, etc. In addition to making new product/service announcements, this social media is used to do contests where the first person to come in and answer the daily Facebook question gets a certain percentage off their entire purchase. This added to the fun during the height of Halloween season.

My best tactics for social media would have to be LinkedIn. I link up with people that were clients of mine before, then they may go off and get another career at another place but still need balloon décor. Or they will refer me to the new person in charge through LinkedIn. It has been a great tool for me to use to remind old, new and potential clients of where to go to get balloon and fabric décor.

We are a seasonal Halloween retail store, and our most beneficial social media tool has been Facebook "Check-Ins." We offered our customers at the store a discount if they would "check-in" on Facebook with their cell phones. It worked out great. We had hundreds of people checking in and sharing it with their friends. The catch was that they would have to check-in before they saw the deal or discount.

We promoted it on our Facebook page, website and full color posters in the store. The only drawback is that you have to submit it to Facebook for review and it takes 2-3 business days to change it. I made a change on a Thursday and it didn't go through until Tuesday afternoon.

We've established a wide age range of loyal customers in our 28 years in business. Very few baby boomers and collectors are on email, so we cater to them with personal phone calls year round, which they love.

Valentine's Day, Easter and Mother's Day regulars also receive personal phone reminders and specials. Others receive emails. We really like Facebook and update it regularly. This takes a lot of time and organization, but it is worth every moment.

Our dear, loyal long time customers really appreciate the friendliness and personal attention.
