The Store Room: What were the most popular graduation products this season?

Our monthly column is devoted to what works and what doesn’t — for our readers, from our readers

“What were the most popular graduation products this season?”

The most popular graduation items in the store this year were personalized banners and yard signs. We had just added them to the store and they took off! We also added personalized mugs and water bottles and those flew off the shelves quicker than we could make them. This year’s trend led more in combined graduation parties, with two or three grads sharing in the expenses.

We had a very busy graduation season this year. For the girls we have been doing a lot of bright colors and zebra and cheetah print items. The boys were more into the general graduation decorations and using their school colors. For both male and female, anything “2012” and our school specific items that we get from Beistle sold well.

Balloons also sold very well this year, and we carry many items for the schools in our area such as Mylar balloons, banners, yard signs and centerpieces that we custom make for our customers.

Anything that was magenta and zebra sold, and the Amscan zebra and magenta graduation pattern was my No. 1 pattern for women.

The most popular graduation products for my store were the card boxes, balloons, table covers, confetti and streamers.

By far, our custom centerpieces and school logo balloons sold the best. Card boxes are also very popular. I bring in all styles from all companies. We also custom design card boxes with a school logo sticker and a custom bow to coordinate.

Graduation 2012 was very busy this season with most everything selling above plan.  Silver Megaloon numbers are a perennial favorite for graduation and did exceptionally well this year.

School colors in balloon décor and Megaloons in the graduation year and always a hit.

Most popular for girls was our Hello Kitty balloon topiary with grad Mylar sprays in hot pink and zebra with boa feather trim.  Money leis topped the list for all ages and we customized with sports, nursing themes, college colors and lots of uniquely folded dollar bills.
