Georgia Governor Proclaims September Balloon Month

Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue has declared the month of September as Balloon Month.

Maxine Burton, president and founder of Georgia-based burton+BURTON, spearheaded the initiative to coincide with next month's International Balloon Month.

In its inaugural year, International Balloon Month seeks to raise awareness of the joy of balloons as well as to spotlight the economic impact the multi-billion dollar balloon industry has on the state of Georgia and the world.

A mainstay in the Athens business community since 1982, burton + BURTON (formerly Flowers, Inc. Balloons), is the largest distributor of balloons and coordinating gifts in the world.

"If you've bought a balloon from a retailer in the past 20 years, there's a very good chance it passed through our doors," said Steve Rose, marketing communications coordinator for burton+ BURTON.

Athens business owner Maxine Burton, president and founder of Georgia-based burton + BURTON, became a pioneer in the industry by printing messages on what were then relatively new foil balloons in the early 1980s. Mrs. Burton was one of the first to produce and market this "floating greeting card." Today, foil balloons play a large part in many events.
